In a special section of this issue, ADE staff members have taken the liberty of doing for those of you who chair ADE-member departments what you will soon be able to do online yourselves: searching through past issues of the ADE Bulletin to uncover comment and information about topics of immediate concern or perennial interest. In Browsing the Bulletin Archives, James Papp, assistant director of ADE, presents a series of brief sententiae and two complete articles he selected from bulletins of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. His choicesand his words of introductory explanationsuggest the mixture of surprise and self-recognition, closeness and distance, sameness and change, instruction at the past's feet and amusement (or perhaps on occasion affront) at its expense that these until now largely inaccessible pages make usefully available to young and not so young members of the ADE community.
The ADE site on the World Wide Weblocated at www.ade.orgwas at first available only in rudimentary form. Its function during late 1997 was chiefly to allow chairs of member departments to give colleagues and graduate students access to the online MLA Job Information List. By the time this issue reaches you, we expect the Web page designed for us by SilverPlatter, as well as the complete ADE Bulletin archive, 196497, to be available for members' use. The archive has been converted to electronic form, and articles have been provided with header tags. As I write, the task of indexing articles for content and assigning index terms is nearing completion. The archive will be available online for topical searching or issue-by-issue browsing by chairs of ADE-member departments. Other functions include a chairs-only discussion group and registration for the 1998 ADE seminars.
The seminar registration fee remains $250 for the first departmental representative and $200 for each additional representative. Topics for plenary sessions and discussions will be available online at www.ade.org when they are confirmed.
